Salim and Sungkem, The Gesture of Courtesy

Salim and Sungkem are hand kissing gesture which indicating courtesy, politeness, and respect of elder people of both genders. Both salim and sungkem are still carried on in daily life of people nowadays though in modern family these gestures are not popular anymore.

살림(Salim)과 숭껨(Sungkem)은 어르신들께 예의와 공경을 표시하는 손 키스 제스처입니다. 살림과 숭껨은 지금도 사람들이 일상 생활에서 사용하고 있기는 하지만 현대의 가족 사이에서는 이제 그렇게 많이 쓰이지는 않습니다. 

The term "salim" and "sungkem" might be the same, but in the place where I live they have different meanings. Salim and Sungkem are terms used by Javanese. There are differences between the two. Salim is a hand-kissing gesture addressed to older person of both genders or to someone admirable. It shows respect and even devotion. The person greets by holding out someone's hand with the palm facing downward and kiss it lightly or  draw the hand to his/her own forehead. This practice is commonly done by Javanese.

두 가지 단어는 동일할 수도 있지만, 제가 사는 지역에서는 의미가 다릅니다. 살림과 숭껨은 자바 사람들이 사용하는 말로, 서로 차이가 있습니다. 살림은 존경하는 어른께 사용하는 손 키스 제스처로 남녀 모두에게 사용할 수 있습니다. 이 제스처는 존경 뿐 아니라 헌신을 뜻하기도 합니다. 인사를 드리는 사람은 받는 사람의 손바닥을 아래쪽으로 향하게 하여 손을 잡은 후 가볍게 키스를 하거나 손을 자신의 이마에 가져다 댑니다. 자바인들은 이러한 인사를 널리 사용합니다. 

"Salim" is a normal everyday "scene" at schools in my city. Students do "salim" to respect their teachers. They greet the teachers by giving their hand to their teacher and the teacher will give his/her hand to accept the greeting. After class students will line up to greet the teacher with "salim" before they leave the class.

살림은 제가 사는 지역의 보통 일상적인 "모습"입니다. 학생들이 선생님에 대한 존경의 의미로 "살림"을 합니다. 학생들이 손을 선생님께 내밀면 선생님도 손을 내밀어 학생들의 인사를 받아 줍니다. 수업이 끝나면 학생들은 교실을 나가기 전에 줄을 서서 선생님께 "살림"을 합니다.

"Salim" is also done in the family to respect elder family members and relatives. Children kiss their parents' hands and this gesture is also done by wife towards her husband to show her loyalty, respect and love. "Salim" is also a normal gesture done in a traditional Islamic society to respect the "ulama" (religious elite / scholars).

그 외에 가족이나 친척의 어르신을 공경하기 위해 살림을 하기도 합니다. 아이들이 부모님의 손에 키스를 하고, 아내가 남편에게 성실, 존경, 사랑을 보여주기 위해 이 제스처를 하기도 합니다. 그리고 전통적인 이슬람 사회에서는 "울라마(ulama)" (종교적인 지도자/학자)에 대한 존경의 의미로 보통 살림을 합니다. 

"Sungkem", on the other hand, is a special gesture done in "Lebaran" (a term that Indonesian used for Islamic biggest holiday Eid-al-fitr). It is carried out by children to their parents or wife to her husband by kneeling down and kiss the sitting-respectful person's hand with two hands, unlike salim which hold one's hand with one hand only. People who receive "sungkem" usually will pat the greeter's shoulder and head. This gesture is more private, emotional, and usually full of tears. It is also a symbol of asking for forgiveness, devotion, and big respect.

반면 "숭껨"은 르바란(Lebaran-이슬람 최고의 명절 Eid-al-fitr의 인도네시아식 표현)간에 행하는 특별한 행동입니다. 아이들이 부모에게, 또는 아내가 남편에게 무릎을 꿇고 앉아 있는 상대방의 손을 두 손으로 잡고 키스하는 것입니다. 한 손으로 상대방의 한 손을 잡는 살림과는 다르지요. 숭껨을 받는 사람은 보통 인사하는 사람의 어깨와 머리를 가볍게 두드립니다. 이 동작은 보다 특별하고, 감정적이며 눈물 속에 이루어지기도 합니다. 숭껨은 용서, 헌신, 커다란 존경을 청하는 행위이기도 합니다.

Unlike "salim" which is done in everyday situation, "sungkem" is more special. So, next time when you go to Indonesia and meet children then they ask to kiss for your hand then don't be surprised. It's how they respect older people :) 

일상 생활에서 이루어지는 살림과 달리 숭껨은 보다 특별합니다. 나중에 인도네시아에 가서 여러분의 손에 키스하려는 아이들을 만나도 놀 라지 마세요. 아이들이 어른을 공경하는 방법일 뿐이니까요. :)

Bungeoppang-붕어빵, Korean winter snack

Have you ever seen this in Korean dramas?
Maybe yes, because it is one of the most popular winter snacks in Korea called Bungeoppang (붕어빵). Bungeo means fish and ppang means bread in Korean. So literally it is fish-shaped bread, but it would be more correct to call it one kind of pastry.
Pernah nonton drama Korea dan menemukan kue ini?
Ini adalah snack alias jajanan musim dingin yang super terkenal di iKorea yang disebut Bungeoppang  (붕어빵). Bungeo artinya ikan dan ppang artinya roti dalam bahasa Korea. Jadi kalo digabungkan namanya jadilah Roti ikan - roti yang bentuknya ikan. Tapi sebenarnya lebih pas disebut pastry (kue bukan roti)


It could be easily seen in the past, but the nunber of Bungeoppang vendors seems to be decreasing. I see less of them in recent years. About 3 to 4 years ago, you could get 4 Bungeoppangs with only 1 dollar. But now you can buy only 3 of them with the same amount of money. The price might slightly differ from town to town.
Dulu sangat mudah menemukan Bungeoppang dijual di mana-mana, tapi skearang penjual Bungeopp[ang sudah semakin berkurang. Sekitar 3-4 tahun yang lalu, 4 Bungeoppang harganya sekitar $1 alias 12 ribuan. Tapi sekarang hanya dapat 3 Bungeoppang. Tapi bisa jaid harganya berbeda di kota  lain. 


Making Bungeoppang is not that difficult. First, pour the batter into the fish-shaped mold. Then add some red bean paste. Third, cover the paste with more batter. Next, close the mold cap. Make sure to turn over them after a while to ensure the pastry is fully baked inside out. (The fish mold is separated from each other and you can turn over it one at a time.)
Membuat Bungeoppang itu tidak mudah. Pertama, adonan dituang ke dalam cetakan kue bentuk ikan. Tambahkan pasta kacang merah. Ketiga, tutp adonan yang sudah diisi dengan adonan tepung lagi. Tutup cetakannya dan bolik cetakan untuk memastikan dua sisi kue matang sempurna . (Cetakan ikannya terpisah satu sama lain tapi bisa dibalik secara bersamaan di atas kompor)


They are crispy outside and very soft inside, with sweet red bean taste. (Caution: Very hot inside!!!) What's intersting is there are companies selling pre-made Bungeoppang batter and red bean paste. Doesn't it sound easy? But I guess the cost for mold might be high. Also, you need to keep in mind that you have to work outside in cold winters!!
Kue ini bagian luarnya renyah dan bagian dalamnya sangat lembut dengan rasa pasta kacang merah yang manis  (Awas jika makan harus hati-hati karena bagian dalamnya sangay panas). Yang menarik adalah sekarang ada perusahaan yang menjual adonan Bungeoppang dan juga pasta kacang merahnya. Jadi tinggal menuang saja di cetakan, mudah kan? Tapi saya rasa harga cetakannya agak mahal sih. Oh ya, perlu diingat juga ya bahwa kue ini dimasak di luar dengan cuaca musim dingin yang dingin he he.

But don't worry. There are Bungeoppang makers for domestic use. If you are a big fan of Bungeoppang, just invest around 25 dollars to buy one. You can also buy small-volume pre-mix online.
Jangan khawatir. Ada alat pembuat Bingeoppang untuk penggunaan di rumah. Jika teman-teman penggemar Bungeoppang, sishkan saja uang sekitar $25 untuk membeli cetakannya, Ada juga cetakan yang dijual online dengan ukuran yang lebih kecil



Recently, there are miniature  Bungeoppang, which is about smaller than half the size of original one. It is so cute and I even took a selfie with it!
Akhir-akhir ini ada juga Bungeoppang mini, ukurannya sekitar setengah dari ukuran Bungeoppang normal. Imut sekali dan saya juga berselfie dengan Bungeoppang mini loh!

We love Bungeoppang so much, and there are even ice cream and snack that look like Bungeoppang
Kami. orang Korea, sangat suka Bungeoppang, dan bahkan ada es krim dan makanan ringan yang bentuknya persis Bungeoppang.

Also I'd like to share with you that  Bungeoppang means two identical things in Korean language. For instance, there is a TV show titled Bungeoppang where celebrities and their kids play games together. But this kind of usage is rather casual and not often used in formal settings.
Oh ya, Bungeoppang juga berarti 2 hal yang identik dalam bahasa Korea. Di Korea ada acara TV yang berjudul Bungeoppang. Di acara ini selebriti dan anak-anaknya bermain games bersama. Tapi istilah Bungeoppang ini istilah gaul (bahasa sehari-hari) yang tidak dipakai dalam ragam bahasa formal.

Nogosari - The Hidden Banana King

Indonesians love snacks. Some snacks are sold only in the morning or the afternoon. I am at my father’s home now and I found “nagasari” (pronounce nogosari). It’s a Javanese traditional snack. It is mix of rice flour, coconut milk, and banana wrapped in a banana leaf and then steamed.

인도네시아 사람들은 간식을 좋아합니다. 어떤 간식은 아침이나 오후에만 팝니다. 저는 지금 아버지 집에 있는데, "nagasari"(노고사리로 발음)을 찾았습니다. 노고사리는 자바의 전통적 간식입니다. 밀가루, 코코넛밀크, 바나나를 섞어 바나나 잎에 싸서 찌는 것입니다.

Most Javanese snacks are made of rice flour. The dough is mixed with coconut milk instead of milk (the “moo” milk I mean :D ). Banana leaf is another important material for cooking the traditional recipe. Many food and snacks are wrapped in banana leaf or sometimes coconut milk.

대부분의 자바 간식은 쌀가루로 만듭니다. 반죽은 우유(젖소의 우유 :D) 대신 코코넛밀크로 섞습니다. 바나나 잎 또한 전통적 요리법에 중요한 재료입니다. 많은 음식이나 간식들을 바나니 잎이나 코코넛밀크로 감쌉니다.

Nogosari is always sold fresh, so it is sold in the morning only. You can find nogosari in street snack vendor. Young people are not a fan of this snack. Old people love this snack more! I myself has just recently found that nogosari tasted "okay" ha ha. It costs around 2000 - 3000 Rupiah ($1 is about 12,000 Rupiah)

노고사리는 항상 신선하게 판매되기 때문에, 아침에만 판매됩니다. 길거리의 음식 노점상에서 노고사리를 볼 수 있습니다. 젊은 사람들은 이 간식을 그다지 좋아하지 않습니다. 나이가 많은 사람들이 이 간식을 더 좋아합니다! 저도 최근에야 노고사리가 "괜찮은" 맛이라는 것을 알았답니다! 하하..노고사리는 2천에서 3천 루피아입니다. (1달러는 약 12,000루피아입니다.)

So here’s nogosari. Soft savory a bit sweet snack with banana filling. Oh I forgot to mention, the banana used to make this snack is called Pisang Raja (The king banana). It has hard-crunchy texture when it’s boiled. So it’s perfect for steamed snacks filling. 

이것이 노고사리입니다. 바나나가 들어있고, 부드럽고 약간 달콤한 간식이지요. 아, 노고사리를 만들 때 사용되는 바나나를 Pisang Raja(왕 바나나)라고 한다는 얘기를 깜빡했네요. 이 바나나는 익히면 딱딱하고 씹히는 식감이 있습니다. 그래서 익힌 간식류의 속을 채우기에 딱입니다.
