Hello from Indonesia

Hi,
My name is Silvana. I'm the Indonesian blogger, Jiyoung's friend. Thank's to Jiyoung who responded well to this project, finally we can introduce you things in our life from Korea and Indonesia. When I mentioned Indonesia, a country with more than 17,000 islands it should not represent the general face of custom/culture of Indonesia. Posts here are from the place where I live, my own experience and comparison to Jiyoung's posts.
I hope you like the blog :)
Thank you

Gula Kapuk / Arumanis, the Indonesian Affogato

I really like my dearest Korean friend's post about Affogato, the cotton candy. If you haven't read her post about it, simply click here. I think it's a brilliant idea for coffee shops to invent such cute menu. I wonder how was the affogato selling in Valentine's Day. There's no Affogato on a cup in Indonesia, wel..so far I haven't seen any. But Affogato is known as gula kapuk or arumanis in my local language. Gula is sugar and kapuk is kapok.

Kapok is a tropical tree and may also refer to the cotton-like fluff obtained from its seed pods. The fiber is used for pillow filling. But nowadays people choose the synthetic fiber instead of the natural kapok fiber for pillow filling. Gula kapuk / arumanis form is fluffy just like kapuk. That's why it is called gula kapuk. Arumanis is the term used in my neighborhood. Manis from the name arum means sweet.

Nowadays it's pretty hard to find gula kapuk street vendor. I also rarely see gula kapuk sold in a mall or tourist area. Usually it is sold in a night market. There is modern machine to make gula kapuk, but the traditional way is still fascinating. You can see how the gula kapuk is made in this video.

As you can see the seller uses his bike for gula kapuk production. He used a motor with methanol as the fuel. Ignited with a match the motor turns the spin wheel to change the pink pigmented sugar into soft kapuk sugar web. In the past the seller paddled his bike's pedal to run the motor.

Gula kapuk is sold for 5000 rupiah. $1 is around 12,000 rupiah so you can get 2 gula kapuk for one dollar. When you find a gula kapuk seller on your trip to Surabaya, don't forget to try this simple sweet delicacy :)

Cotton candy affogato! Cloud on my cup of coffee

Koreans love coffee. Coffee shops are located on almost every street corner and the competition is fierce among dozens of local and international coffee franchises ranging from Starbucks to Cafe Bene. One statistics showed that half of the coffee shops are closed within 3 years of business establishment.

(Oh no!!!) So what small players should do to survive? They have to differentiate themselves from the big ones. One good example of such effort could be a unique menu that franchise cafes don't offer.

So here comes cotton candy affogato. It is still not widely known but getting increasingly hot with its sweet and pretty look.
Inilah gula kapuk affogato.

See, it's like having a piece of fluffy cloud on your cup! This coffee shop has a small  cotton candy maker and makes cotton candies without artificial pigments.

So if you order this, you have to wait at least 5 minutes to get it served. The cafe staff said it takes about 2 minutes to get the machine heated and another 2-3 minutes to make a cotton candy.

See what happens when you pour your espresso on the cotton candy.
